Current activities
Denise leads a portfolio of marine debris or land-based waste projects, including the Emerging Priorities NESP project ' Assessing the effectiveness of waste management in reducing the levels of plastics entering Australia’s marine environment'.
Background
Denise is a broadly trained ecologist with expertise and experience. She has conducted research on all continents during the course of her career, and she has a background in molecular ecology, tropical ecology and avian ecology. Her long standing interest in ecological issues has been focused on marine debris and fisheries management of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing over the last several years. In recognition of CSIRO's work in this area, the marine debris team Denise leads won the 2016 Eureka Prize for for Environmental Research.
